Interview with Loreen Niewenhuis

Long walks seem to be a theme for me this week – or at least the contemplation of them. I started the week talking about the sleepy schlepp through Disneyland with kids in tow and now I’m ending the week with the lovely chat I had with Loreen Niewenhuis on my Blog Talk Radio show “Find Your Spark” about her 1,000 mile trek around Lake Michigan. Now that’s a walk!

Come, listen and be inspired to maybe push through to reach that goal you’ve been shooting for, whether it’s starting a blog or running a marathon. It was great fun and a very uplifting conversation, so grab a cup of tea, or your beverage of choice, and sit for a spell…

Being a Woman of Substance

In my former life, I was a singer – even had a record deal for about 5 minutes. By former life, I mean, of course (as
many moms can relate), before I had kids.  Not that having kids ended my dream of a career in the music industry, it’s more that my life changed and consequently my dreams took on a different cloak.  I no longer felt that the nightclub, constant auditioning and looking for the next gig life was something I wanted to do, as it would mean trading lots of time away from my kids.  I wanted to find other creative outlets – ones that were closer to the homestead. That’s one of the main reasons this blog was born.

But I still adore music and I love to see women who have managed to strike a working balance between pursuing their musical aspirations and raising a family.  One such person is Bree Noble of Women of Substance Radio.  Bree is showcasing tons of independent women artists on her streaming internet radio station as well as providing a space for small businesses to promote their service and products.  I love this quote from her website:

“Substance can be defined as a significant quality with the implication of a hidden or special significance. Music of Substance is not just entertainment or fluff, but has an essental “core” brimming with heart, soul, and spirit.

Women of Substance are female performers who deliver high quality music that speaks to the listener through vocal excellence, depth of character and emotion, and lyrics that leave a lasting impression. This includes Label Artists, Indies and Unsigned artists alike.”

If you enjoy listening to new music from independent artists, check out Bree’s station and become a fan of Women of Substance Radio on Facebook. And, of course, be sure to listen to our lively conversation on this week’s “Find Your Spark” show:

Question #3:

Where will Bree be going to sing right after our interview is over?

The Art of Reinventing Yourself

This week’s interview on “Find Your Spark” was a replay of a chat that I had a couple of months ago with Jennifer 09112008180
Chambers, author of “Learning Life Again”, a book about how a young girl’s life changes after she suffers a severe brain injury.  The story is fictional, but it was created because of the similar experience of the author who sustained life-altering injuries after being in a terrible car accident at the age of 15.

Starting Life Over

Jennifer lost all memory of her life before the accident. This kind of situation may seem unthinkable for most of us and it really started me thinking about the nature of personality and how we define ourselves.  In our interview, Jennifer mentioned that there were some things about her personality that stayed the same, like her love for writing, but some things were completely different. She had trained as an opera singer and had performed in front of large audiences, but post-accident, she is shy and apprehensive about getting up on any stage.

Followed by Destiny?

What would life be like if you lost who you thought you were and couldn’t relate to your family and friends anymore because you could no longer recall years of shared experiences?  Some people believe in destiny, and if that’s the case, does it still follow us even if we’ve lost part of who we are, as in Jennifer’s case? Are we our personalites or do we make it up as we go along?

Discovering Purpose Through Tragedy

I had the pleasure of talking this week with author and therapist, Kevin Malarkey, who wrote the New York Times Best-Selling book “The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven”.  The chat we had on the “Find Your Spark” show pulled at my heart-strings as we spoke about the accident that left Kevin’s son Alex paralyzed at the tender age of 6 years old. But it was also wonderfully inspiring to hear a child’s innocent take on tragedy and learn of the bravery and resilience he exhibited throughout the entire ordeal.  Kevin and his family also recieved some surprising gifts and lessons from the unbelievable experiences and stories that Alex relayed to them after he emerged from a coma.

Visiting Another World

Alex not only survived a terrible accident, he went on to tell everyone of witnessing amazing events in heaven while he was in his comatose state. He also displayed a wisdom, confidence and serenity that were far beyond his years. It is chilling reading Alex’s account of what he saw right before and immediately after the accident occurred, when most of the first people on the scene assumed he was dead or dying.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this amazing story and any questions or comments you might have about my interview with Kevin.

Interview with Cheryl Cooley of 80′s R&B/Pop Group “Klymaxx”

I don’t know about you, but music always has the power to transport me from a bad mood to a good one in mere seconds. I’m especially fond of music that makes me reminisce about certain periods of my life, in particular, my “back in the day” days.  So, of course, I was pleased as punch to host Cheryl Cooley of the R&B/Pop group Klymaxx on my Blog Talk Radio show “Find Your Spark” last Monday. If you grew up in the 80′s and were into music, you probably grooved at one time or another to “Meeting in the Ladies Room” or “The Men All Pause”. Even if you somehow missed those super-hot party and club favorites, you’ve undoubtedly heard their #1 hit “I Miss You”, a song that has been a contemporary music and easy-listening radio station staple over the years, even up to this day.
It was fun nostalgia listening to those songs again, but it was also quite interesting and inspirational talking to Cheryl about what she’s been up to of late and hearing her take on following your passion and being adaptable to change.  Fun and inspiration all in one sitting…that’s my kind of chat!

Find Your Spark: Interview with Linda Smaldore of Bean-B-Clean

Linda Smaldore was born in St. Albans, NY into a military family and has had the opportunity to live in California, Alaska, Oklahoma, Virginia and Hawaii. Her father was one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, a band of black fighter pilots of WWII, and her mother was born in Jamaica, West Indies.

Linda’s company, Bean-B-Clean, is a result of trying to help her newborn grandson get rid of a bad case of cradle cap with no chemicals or toxins. Teaming up with her husband Joe, the Smaldores searched for a solution – certain that they would find a product on the market to solve this age-old problem. When nothing turned up, the Smaldores set out on a quest to come up with a solution themselves. That’s how the Bean-B-Clean™ was born. The best part is that Bean-B-Clean™ is a locally owned, operated, and invented item in Springfield, Virginia!

Click on the link below to listen to my chat with Linda about her very personal inspiration to start her business and become a “grandmom-preneur”!

Interview with April Fan of Senior Resource Central

Join me as I chat with my guest April Fan of SeniorResource Central. April’s professional life has revolved around working with and caring for seniors. As a registered dietitian she has consulted at skilled nursing facilities in the Pacific Northwest for over a decade. After the birth of her first son, she decided she needed to find a way to spend more time at home and still make a good living. So, she scaled back to part time employment and started investing in real estate. She had an opportunity to simply educate seniors about finding the best way to sell their house and, in the right circumstances, even buy their house for them, so they’d have a way to pay for their new residence and/or medical care. My House Sold,LLC was open for business. Even having years of experience working with seniors as a Regional Dietitian and a Housing Transition Consultant, she found myself struggling to find good information when it came time to help her own parents into retirement. She pooled all her resources and experiences to create Senior Resource Central in hopes that it will make this always difficult process easier for others. As a Senior Resource Diva, April Fan, RD, CD, is on a mission to educate baffled adult children who are currently caring for their own children as well as their aging parents. Her goal is to help these juggling caregivers discover how to take the confusion out of this daunting role. Tap into April’s personal and clinical experiences, proven resources, handy tips and sane ideas at http://www.SeniorResourceCentral.com.
